Power Automedia’s video production division, Alloy Studios, recently created an immersive commercial to show off the legendary and well-known Mickey Thompson tires at the track in conjunction with Street Outlaws superstar Daddy Dave.
This spot wasn’t just about the dragstrip, but also featured Mickey’s popular Baja ATZ tires which Daddy Dave uses on his Chevrolet 3500HD tow vehicle. With all of the miles that Dave travels for the popular TV show, he needs a tire he can depend on when money is on the line. Dave’s 2,000+ horsepower Nova also uses Mickey Thompson ET drag tires to do battle in No-Prep races all over the country.
“From scripting to final delivery, the Alloy Studios team did a fantastic job on this project,” said Ken Warner, Mickey Thompson Marketing Vice President. “We can always count on our friends at Power Automedia when we are in a pinch and need quick turnaround. They battled bad weather on a fast paced racing weekend, working between rounds to delivery excellent content for this commercial.”
“As stated so eloquently in this piece, ‘When it’s time to put up or shut up’ our Alloy Studios team does just that,” said Andrew Almazan, Power Automedia’s Alloy Studios Creative Operations Director. “Armed with more than just camera gear and editing software, I am proud to stand amongst men and women equipped with this level passion when it comes to bringing a vision to life.”
Mickey Thompson Tires recently underwent a complete brand refresh– with a new look, feel, and message. To help them show off their new image, Power Automedia’s Alloy Studios produced two commercial videos showcasing Mickey Thompson and Dick Cepek’s evolution as a company.
“With Undisputed, our goal was to show innovation, new products, and the overall new look and attitude for the company. We wanted something edgy that highlighted a bit of how our company was born more than fifty years ago, bringing our fans into the now, and showing them where we are going for the next 50 years.”
“We had to get our audience excited about the new look and this video exceeded our expectations,” said Ken Warner, Vice President of Marketing at Mickey Thompson. “Our goals for the Dick Cepek video were different, though– we wanted a spot that was fun and showed how the tires look and perform in real life.”
“Working with Power Automedia and Alloy Studios is always a great experience,” said Warner. “They have a talented team that can easily grasp a vision and present it in a visual style that is appealing to the enthusiast aftermarket audience. They all live and breathe the types of activities that our core customers are into; whether it’s drag racing, off roading, street performance, or even extreme stuff like Bonneville and short track racing. They have been there and it gives them an advantage over other studios.”
“We were challenged with the task of capturing the specific brand message,” said James Lawrence, Power Automedia CEO. “Mickey Thompson had a clear vision of what they wanted and they gave us the creative license to take their concept and then let our crew work their magic. We worked with one of their agencies – Wayne Williams Marketing – hand-in-hand to take this from cradle to grave.”
“Both videos were a great success,” said Warner. “Our wholesale customers see value in brands that can achieve results like this and it helps them sell the products with enthusiasm and drive. Consumers want to connect with brands that are fun and forward thinking.”

Mickey Thompson Tires recently contracted Power Studios to create a narrative lifestyle video on Danny’s Thompson’s record-setting efforts at Bonneville.
Brandon McCray, one of the leading videographers from Power Studio’s video team, traveled more than 700 miles to capture this once-in-a-lifetime event: Danny Thompson’s 400 MPH attempt at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Utah. McCray attended the official “Speed Week” on August 11-14 to capture the Thompson team’s setup, qualifying runs, and return run.
The resulting video is spine-tingling and tells a story about the Thompson family that is a must-watch. Watch it below:
Known for his racing endeavors on the Bonneville salt flats, Mickey Thompson’s name became well known in the ‘60s for being the first American to break into the 400 MPH zone; but he never achieved his dream of officially entering the “400mph club.” Ever since Mickey’s death his son Danny has been chasing that unfulfilled dream of his father’s.
“It was crazy to think I was there to document something that could potentially be historical,” Power Studio’s McCray explained. “Since I was a kid, I’ve taken my dad’s Hot Rod magazines so I could check out the coverage from Bonneville. There is something about the idea of going as fast as you can that attracts a speed freak – attending that event had been something I wanted to do for years! It didn’t matter if you had a streamliner, a ‘30s Ford roadster, or a Honda Civic – people were there for the speed! For new and old car enthusiasts, it’s something you need to see at least once in your life.”
The vast expanse of salt flats includes both three courses and tracks, with the longest being five miles long with a three mile shut down. While many people were there in hopes of personal achievement, it is harder than it seems to hit that 200 mph mark. Danny Thompson made the attempt for more than five years to reach 200-plus mph, leaving the new goal of reaching 400 mph quite an undertaking for him and his team of volunteers.
Danny Thompson executed a 411 mph pass on his first Speed Week attempt with a 402 mph return pass – achieving an official 400 mph+ record at a qualifying average of 406.7 MPH. After 56 years of building, and many attempts, Danny said, “I’m proud to say that this weekend my crew and I were able to take care of my father’s unfinished business.”
