R.I.P. Adobe Flash: 1996 – 2015

Adobe Flash, a software application that revolutionized the way we developed websites nearly twenty years ago, is all but dead.

Adobe Flash enabled us to create rich graphics and stream rich media in a time when bandwidth was minimal. Do you remember Dreamweaver?  I do – “hello fellow Generation X‘ers”.  Flash was a good friend to us all.

Many of us may remember the highly publicized debate of Steve Job’s resistance to supporting Flash in Apple’s nifty little iPhone.  The original iPhone was released in June, 2007; we didn’t realize it at the time, but this marked the beginning of the end for Adobe’s leading product. Then in 2010, two critical things happened to Flash – first, Steve Jobs publicly shared his “thoughts on Flash”, and second, YouTube rolled out their latest player in – wait for it…HTML5.  Many thought Jobs was just being Jobs, but the reality is that he was right.  The platform was dated, it had security issues, and lacked touch support.

HTML5 is the new standard. It provides adaptability across desktop, tablets, and mobile devices without clunky plug-ins. It’s highly customizable and supports rich media.  HTML5 is simply a modern code that supports technology and consumerism.  As a result Google Chrome and many other popular web browsers stopped supporting Flash.

Power Automedia digital magazines no longer accept Flash ads

If you’re responsible for your company’s digital marketing, you need to replace your Flash ads with a format that is supported on all web browsers.  With the recent updates by Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge, there has been a large emphasis on disabling the ability to view Adobe Flash driven content.  Because of this, Power Automedia digital magazines no longer accept Flash ads.

Be sure to review all of your digital display ads and make sure they are of a browser supported format, including JPEG, animated GIF, or HTML5.  Serving Flash ads will compromise your messaging and ad performance.  If you need digital ad design assistance, please let us know – we’re here to help.

What makes a “good” company culture? This is a question that has been asked by countless business owners and employees, especially over the last several years, as that phrase has become somewhat of a buzzword in corporate lingo. Building something special through company culture, however, goes much deeper at Power Automedia.

If you spend some time researching the term, you will find a lot of different perspectives. Company culture has been described as “just the way we do things,” the “personality” of the company, the company mindset, or — one of my favorites — what we do when we think nobody is looking. The truth is that culture is different at every company, so these definitions can all be true.

There is often a belief that the culture of a company is just something that exists on its own, independently of the team — that one can just arrive and participate, and it will always be what it is. At Power Automedia, we disagree. We look at culture as a constantly evolving entity that is shaped daily by the team that we work with.

Culture doesn’t create itself, but it will certainly exist at every company. For culture to be healthy, it has to be nurtured by the entire company, from top leadership down to the newest team member. And, as such, we have to be thoughtful about the kind of culture we want to foster and create.

How can we create a culture of hard work and determination, while still respecting the needs of an employee’s life outside of our office walls?

We start by using our “why” as the guiding light to creating a healthy company culture, one that is not based off of the idea of perfection, but rather the things that we believe are vital to our expression of why we do what we do:

  • We believe in the magic of the automobile
  • We believe in helping people achieve their dreams
  • We believe in building something special

Additionally, we work to stay connected with each other. We have a party planning committee (PPC) with members from every department working together to plan several monthly activities, both inside the office and out. It can be as silly as a ‘90s dress-up day, or an event that takes advanced planning, such as our annual Power Automedia Olympics.

As I am writing this, our team is getting ready to participate at an indoor karting facility for a healthy dose of competition and go-kart races. We do these activities, not to just create a place to work that is “fun,” but because we genuinely believe that on top of the hard work, fun is vital to relationships, communication, and family spirit.

And, fun isn’t the only way we are connecting. Whether it is an annual call for input and ideas from all employees, to our monthly newsletters and All Hands Meetings, we consistently look for opportunities to ensure that all Power Automedia employees play a role in the culture, and the roadmap of our company.

Power Automedia is only as strong as its people, and their investments in our message. At our most recent annual State of the Company Address (a day-long session of presentations about company performance, future planning, and yes, fun) James Lawrence, company president, summed up our philosophy very well:

SpeedVideo.com, in conjunction with drag racing magazine, Dragzine.com, will live broadcast the original, and world’s’s biggest No­ Prep race, the highly-­anticipated Outlaw Armageddon in Thunder Valley, Oklahoma. The event is sponsored by Triple Diamond Construction.

“We are extremely excited to be able to partner with SpeedVideo.com to bring our event to the Internet,”said Thunder Valley’s Nick Duty. “Just as Outlaw Armageddon revolutionized No Prep Racing last year, SpeedVideo.com will help us take the event to another level for our fans.”

“The demand to have Outlaw Armageddon available for live broadcast has been overwhelming,” said SpeedVideo.com’s James Lawrence. “Not only will fans be able to watch round­-by-­round coverage, but they will also have inside access to the driver’s meeting, and instant replay’s of action on the track. This will be the closest you can be to the excitement without sitting in the stands.”

“The inaugural event was amazing, but ‘Outlaw Armageddon ­ The Second Coming’ promises to be bigger and better,” Duty said. “We have more than doubled the purse to over $80,000 and given every racer in the country the opportunity to be part of one of the largest heads­-up races in 2016 by entering one of our four classes. We have opened the competition up to include 200 racers.”

Outlaw Armageddon is a one­-of-­a-­kind experience

Not only will this race bring together the toughest racers in the country, but it will be done in the heart of the legendary 405 with a flashlight start. The inaugural event was an overwhelming success, with more than 18,000 fans from 38 different states packing the grandstands. For this year’s event, track and the promoters vowed to go bigger and better. The race has been expanded to include Big Tire and Small Tire Invitational races, along with the popular “Race Your Way In” class, and Outlaw Street and True Street classes.

In 2016, fans voiced their opinions on which drivers should be included in both Invitational classes, and with more than one million votes cast, the lineup is even more amazing than last year. Not only have all of the favorites returned to the lists — including Big Chief, Murder Nova, Daddy Dave, Boosted GT, Doc, and Monza — but fans have added such names as Jeff Lutz, Larry Larson, Petey Smallblock, Brian “Chucky” Davis, Mike Murillo, and James “Birman” Finney to the lineup.

The tagline for the event is: “Often Imitated, But Never Duplicated,” because nothing can compare to being deep in the 405, in the cozy confines of Thunder Valley Raceway, with unprecedented access to the baddest racers in the world.

Drag racing magazine, Dragzine.com, to live stream the biggest No Prep Grudge race in history to the World ­ with over $80,000 on the line.

The event is sponsored by Speed Society.

This event features the largest winners purse in the history of No Prep ­style racing, with $50,000 up for grabs in the headlining Big Tire class, plus Small­ Tire, True Street, and truck classes that ratchet the purses even higher.

“We are really excited to be live streaming this event,” said Mike Murillo, one of the event’s promotors. “This is something that has never really been done before. It will be insane. This event is going to be organized chaos.”

Coverage is title-sponsored by CompCams’ FAST Fuel Injection, which allows viewers to access the presentation for free.

Factory Five Cobra Jet Challenge Car Rendering

For the first time since its founding 10 years ago, Power Automedia entered a project car in the prestigious SEMA Show. The build is one of the most ambitious, baddest street cars our team of builders, visionaries, and in-house professionals have ever envisioned.

FFR Cobra Challenge Car_Garage build 3Built almost entirely in a home garage using basic tools, the Factory Five Cobra Jet Challenge Car made its debut at SEMA in Las Vegas in December 2015.

As a featured automobile in the SEMA Battle of the Builders competition, the Challenge Car is constructed of raw billet and carbon fiber with a satin luster, which gives it a rugged, yet sleek and modern appearance without losing the distinctive profile these roadsters are known for.

“This is a true, two-car home garage build that has only been worked on after hours and on the weekends in the last year,” said Mark Gearhart, builder. “We finished it up in our Power Automedia Tech Center due to the SEMA time constraints, and to perform final tests on our in-house Dynojet.”

FFR Cobra Challenge_Cage Toyo TiresThe basis of the project is a proven Factory Five MK4 Challenge series car with the optional Street Completion package (which consists of a second seat, carpet, and a windshield) that adds to its road-worthiness. The Challenge kit differentiates itself from the standard Roadster kit due to its fully integrated, NASA legal cage, a robust halo bar, and fully integrated door bars. A Factory Five standard three-link rear suspension and tubular front suspension are a few of the additional items that are included with the kit.

2015-11-05_05-48-34Purpose-built for track and street use, the 2,100-pound car will be driven to and from the track when it’s raced. It is powered by a fully-built 312 cubic-inch Coyote engine featuring a Livernois-sleeved 3.700-inch bore block and Mahle pistons. It makes more than 530 rear-wheel horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque at a conservative 12:1 compression ratio utilizing InnoV8 billet individual throttle bodies for its aspiration.

“This build has been a labor of love, and we are excited to get it out on road courses to see how it handles and performs,” Gearhart said. “Our thanks to all of our sponsors and build partners who helped this dream become a reality.”
